Botanical Name: Baptisia alba

Variety: White Wild Indigo

Blossom Color: White

Bloom Time: May-Jun

Zone: 4 to 9

Mature Height: 24-48"

Mature Width: 24-36"

Notes: Comes back quickly in spring. Striking charcoal-gray stems with blue-green leaves and pea-like blossoms on long spikes for a striking plant. Popular with insects. Bumblebees are the main pollinators, but the caterpillars of several skippers, butterflies and moths feed on the foliage including the Southern Dogface, Orange Sulphur, Clouded Sulphur, and Eastern Tailed-Blue. Adult Wild Indigo Weevils eat the leaves and flowers of this and other Baptisia species; their grubs attack the seeds in the pods. New sprouts can be mistaken for asparagus in spring. Ate first frost, the entire shrub-like plant turns black, providing a stunning contrast to copper-colored Little Bluestem and golden yellow of Showy Goldenrod.
